Most guys just use their cell phones since the shots will also record a time stamp. Photo cheating is a big issue and at some point it wouldn't surprise me if they require a video with the time stamp showing. There are lots of great waterproof cameras out there that will do a HD quality video with a time stamp showing. I like the Panasonic Lumix TS series as they have available GPS stamps, time stamps etc and are shock and water proof. They take outstanding photos when the light is good and good photos when it is terrible...and you can dunk them under water for those neat landing or releasing shots.
For cell phones, the new Galaxy 7 EDGE takes the best photos out there and is shock and water proof. One of those is in my near future. The iphone 7 takes great shots but isn't waterproof....but you can certainly get a case for it that is.
